The Relative Contribution of Syntactic and Semantic Prominence in Pronoun Reference Resolution

چکیده

Subjects are preferred antecedents for pronominal reference (Mathews and Chodorow, 1988; Hudson-D’Zmura and Tanenhaus, 1997). Many pronoun resolution algorithms account for this by assuming a hierarchy of syntactic prominence with SUBJECTS > OBJECTS. However, for many verbs in English, syntactic role is conflated with semantic role: That is, syntactic SUBJECTS are often semantic AGENTS and so on. So what appears to be the result of the prominence of syntactic SUBJECTS might actually be the result of the prominence of semantic AGENTS over other semantic roles. A series of psycholinguistic experiments compare the influence of syntactic prominence and semantic prominence on the salience of antecedents for subsequent pronominal reference. Results show that both syntactic and semantic prominence are relevant factors and further suggest some revision to the long-assumed syntactic prominence hierarchy. The paper concludes with discussion of specific recommendations for the adaptation of computational models of discourse structure and pronoun resolution.

Pronoun Resolution and the Influence of Syntactic and Semantic Information on Discourse Prominence

Beginning with the observation that syntactic and semantic information often coincide (i.e., subjects are often agents, objects often patients), this study investigates the possibility that preference to resolve a sentence-initial pronoun to a syntactically prominent antecedent might actually be better explained in terms of preference for resolving to a semantically prominent antecedent. The st...

Semantic Priming Effect on Relative Clause Attachment Ambiguity Resolution in L2

This study examined whether processing ambiguous sentences containing relative clauses (RCs) following a complex determiner phrase (DP) by Persian-speaking learners of L2 English with different proficiency and working memory capacities (WMCs) is affected by semantic priming. The semantic relationship studied was one between the subject/verb of the main clause and one of the DPs in the complex D...

Evidence for Gradient Salience: What Happens with Competing Non-salient Referents during Pronoun Resolution?

The necessity of a gradient approach to salience ranking of referents introduced in a discourse is evaluated by looking at (unbound) pronoun resolution preferences when there are competing non-salient referents. The study uses a sentencecompletion technique in which participants had to resolve pronouns (“John sprayed the paint on the wall and then it ...”). Results suggest that a gradient salie...

Joint information value of syntactic and semantic prominence for subsequent pronominal reference

Entities realized in prominent syntactic positions receive some preferential treatment when referred to in a subsequent discourse segment: In particular, they are preferentially referred to with reduced referring expressions, often pronouns. This has been observed in both production (Arnold, 1998) and perception (Gordon et al., 1993; Almor, 1999). As a result, syntactic prominence has been rega...
